50th Anniversary
Ark Blacklands Primary recently marked its 50th anniversary, and the occasion was made even more special with a heartfelt message from music industry figure, Simon Fuller, whose father, Ken Fuller, was the school's inaugural head teacher.
Simon Fuller is widely known for his success in managing the Spice Girls during the 90s and for his co-creation of the reality TV programme Pop Idol in the early 2000s. In his message, which was read at the unveiling of an exhibition on Thursday (23 November), Fuller said, "It is with great pride I can celebrate 50 years of Ark Blacklands Primary Academy on behalf of my father and my family. I have always had the utmost respect for educators all over the world. My father devoted his life to preparing young people for their journey in life and affording parents the confidence and trust in the process. He was a remarkable man, proud and committed to excellence in all that he did."
He added, “I would like to congratulate every student of Ark Blacklands Primary Academy, from the very first day when my father opened the school to the present time; every teacher that has passed through, pursuing a career that enriches our lives and is often underappreciated; and every parent that watches with joy and pride as their children learn and dream of their future and begin their adult lives. I am so happy to celebrate a wonderful school, rich in history and a place that remains deep in my family's heart.”
Mr Fuller’s message was one of many submissions from alumni, whose old photos and anecdotes were included in an exhibition at the school. As part of a diversity and heritage project, the displays also showcased pupils’ family trees and the wide-ranging cultures of families and also included work showing what Blacklands school might look like in another 50 years.
The event launched with singing from the choir, who sang three songs, including a special song written with a local musician last year, and ended with past pupils recreating an old school photo.
Principal, Natalie Rankin, said: “Celebrating the legacy of our school and the hundreds of lives it has touched throughout the years has been very special. Over the past 50 years, our school has become a community pillar, providing countless opportunities for pupils to learn, grow and thrive. Our school is where staff can challenge themselves and discover their passions.
"I was very touched by the message from Simon Fuller and the wonderful memories he shared with us. I do not doubt that under his father's headship, many staff and pupils have carried the values and lessons he taught.
"Thank you to everyone, past and present, who has helped make Ark Blacklands the incredible school it is today. May we continue to inspire and empower future generations."
