Aims
French
The teaching of French at Ark Blacklands provides children with the opportunity to develop an interest in learning about other languages and cultures in a way that is enjoyable and stimulating. We strive to embed the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing necessary to enable children to use and apply their French learning in a variety of contexts. We aim to lay strong foundations for future language learning.
Our approach
At Ark Blacklands, our pupils begin weekly focussed French lessons of approximately 25 minutes in Year 3,4,5 and 6. The teaching of French is supported by resources from www.languageangels.com and Physical French Phonics. The use of these resources ensures that children and staff are exposed to correct pronunciation and intonation from native speakers. Staff further support the delivery of the languages curriculum by providing incidental opportunities (e.g. taking the register in French, quick quizzes) between the weekly lessons.
In the classroom:
- interactive whiteboard presentations and activities provide children with accurate pronunciation
- displays are used to remind children of key vocabulary
- practical activities, songs and games are used to help improve memory and recall
- visual prompts are used to support children in translating new vocabulary
- word mats are available for children to have out on desks to support their learning and recap previous learning
- where staff feel confident, instructions are given in French to expose children to the language as much as possible and in day-to-day contexts
- overtime, children are expected to use an increasing amount of French in day-to-day contexts during lessons.
To further embed our language teaching, we also encourage children and parents to learn together at home using their school laptop, together they can confidently complete activities on the language learning platform www.languageangels.com.
Finally, as an inclusive school, Ark Blacklands values difference and diversity within our school community and the wider world. Whilst our curriculum provides an opportunity to make substantial progress in one language, teaching staff will also try to foster an interest and love for learning languages by celebrating home languages and/or exploiting links when they occur naturally in the curriculum.
Our French curriculum is delivered within the context of our school ‘Habits of Success’: Responsibility, Courage, Independence, Curiosity, Determination, Aspiration and Resilience.
Every child – without exception – can learn a language at Ark Blacklands. Work is differentiated to meet the individual needs of children and pair and group work is organised in different ways according to the needs of the children and the collaborative task.
